In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
