Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. These terminations occurred on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
